Sunshine Thomas – Inspirational Story

Sunshine

Hello family! I am Sunshine Thomas from Woodstock Georgia. My journey started after I went through my divorce of a 21-year marriage. I decided that my health was the most important thing in my life if I were to be alive to be here for my two teenage children. I was to the point that I had high blood pressure, high cholesterol, thyroid disease and just one point away from being insulin dependent. I wasn’t even aware at the time I was diabetic so I decided it was time to take care of me for me and my kiddos.
For me it went quickly because I paid cash for my surgery. Within two weeks I had a surgery date and had went through all of the pre-surgery requisites. My surgery was July 20, 2016 and I had the Gastric Sleeve Surgery with a Hiatal Hernia fix/repair. It was a picture-perfect sleeve surgery however the hernia surgery took a large part of my esophagus out which caused my new tummy to be moved up farther than usual. It caused me some problems with having to be on soft foods longer, chest pains when I ate and I will have to take Nexium for the rest of my life but that is so much safer than the other medical issues I was facing. In 8 months I lost a total of 80 pounds. I lost 50 pounds quickly and started feeling so much better I started walking every day. I was moving and had so much more energy and started to enjoy being more active. Dropping 30 more pounds for a total of 75 pounds lost.
One of my big struggles during this journey is On April 18,2017 I fell on the last step of my staircase. I dislocated my ankle and broke my leg bone between my knee and ankle. It was a terrifying event and had me scared of my sleeve journey and weight loss goal. After an extensive surgery to place a pully system to hold my ankle together and a titanium rod and screws in my leg I had hope of walking again. I was on total bed rest for 8 weeks with a cast on and could put no pressure at all on my leg or foot. After those 8 weeks I pushed myself through the pain and hurt to do physical therapy and learn to walk again. Remember no NSAIDS so lots of pain but I made it. A struggle but also an impossible goal for me. “
I have now begun to walk again and ride my bike in my neighborhood for exercise and to build my leg muscles back up. I will add swimming in the pool at Lifetime Fitness to help with movement and activity this week. I also starting drinking Pruvit Keto/os Max and eating a Keto diet to help start jump start my weight loss again. Thankfully I only gained 10 pounds during my downtime, I could NOT get to the refrigerator or pantry for food 😂 LOL!! I have lost a total of 80 pounds through my journey so far and continue to lose daily.
One piece of advice I wish I had known and will encourage you with is… It will happen, you will lose if you follow your plan and move a little more each day. It may be slow, it may stop, you may fall off and cheat and it will upset you but if you get back on track and keep on keeping on… it will happen.
